Cataract Surgery: How To Prepare

Health & Medical Blog

There are millions of cataract surgeries performed on individuals each year. If you are considering having cataract surgery performed in the near future, then it is important that you take the necessary steps to prepare yourself. If you are unsure what you need to do to prepare, here are a few things you should do.

Do Your Homework

The first thing you need to do to prepare yourself for the cataract surgery is to do some homework. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the actual procedure, the way that the procedure works, and the potential complications associated with the procedure. If you have any questions at all, you should discuss them with your ophthalmologist, as they are the ideal individual to answer any questions and address any concerns that you may have regarding the surgical procedure.

Attend Your Pre-Surgical Appointments

Prior to having the surgery, your ophthalmologist will schedule at least one appointment. During this appointment, your eye will be measured, and several tests will be performed to ensure that everything is ready and good to go for the day of the surgery. Depending on your individual situation, your physician may prescribe eye drops that you will need to place into your eyes for a few days leading up to the procedure. These eye drops will need to be used as prescribed by your eye doctor.

Contact Your Insurance Provider

It is important that you do not wait until the last minute or after receiving the cataract surgery to contact the insurance company and find out what is covered by your insurance policy. Contact your insurer to find out what is covered and what is not covered. If the surgery is covered, find out how much they will pay and what the remaining out-of-pocket cost will be for you. If needed, you can speak to the ophthalmology clinic and have someone in the office contact your insurance provider for you so that your focus can remain on the surgical procedure and the necessary preparations for the procedure.

Arrange for Transportation for the Day of the Procedure

On the day of the surgery, you will not be allowed to drive afterward. Therefore, it is imperative that you have pre-arranged for someone to be available to drive you to and from the surgery center. Plus, it is always calming to have a loved one with you when you are having surgery.

Cataract surgery is generally a quick and easy procedure, resulting in clear vision. Until the day of the surgery, if you have any questions or concerns about how you can prepare, about the procedure itself, or if you are a good candidate for the surgery, contact an ophthalmology clinic in your area.

Allergy Relief: You Have More Options Than You Think

As a child, I used to spend my days roaming through the woods. I climbed trees, smelled the flowers, and laid in the grass looking at the clouds. My love for nature continued through my teen years, but when I turned 23, I began to sneeze whenever I left my home. I could no longer enjoy my outdoor hikes and I started taking antihistamines so I could at least open my windows on warm days. My allergies got worse though and I met with an allergist who completed a variety of skin tests. I started receiving allergy shots and my allergist taught me about natural cleaning processes and sinus rinses. The injections and natural treatments improved my quality of life greatly. Even if you do not want to start allergy injections, you have a variety of options that can lessen your symptoms, and you should learn what these options are.
