4 Ways You Can Alleviate Bunion-Related Pain

If you have developed a bunion, then you probably know by now that it comes with things that you don't want: discomfort, pressure, and pain. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do help relieve that pain that you are experiencing:

1. Soak Your Feet.

An easy and effective way at soothing your sore and irritated feet is to soak them. If you have a foot spa, you can use that. Otherwise, a clean basin will suffice. You will want to fill it with cool or lukewarm water so that it covers your ankles, then add a few tablespoons of bath salts or Epsom salt. You should soak your feet for about 10 to 15 minutes.

2. Wear the Right Shoes.

While bunions are generally caused by genetics, they can also be caused by wearing the wrong shoes. If nothing else, wearing ill-fitted shoes or high heels can definitely make bunion pain worse. You need to make sure that you are wearing shoes with plenty of wiggle room for your toes. Ideally, you need a pair of shoes with a square or round toe box and low heels. You also want to try to avoid shoes with seams in the toe box since they can rub against the bunions and irritate them.

3. Use Protective Pads or Splints/Braces.

If there is plenty of room inside your shoes, you may want to consider using a protective gel pad to protect and cushion the bunion. These pads simply help to keep the bunion from rubbing directly against the side of your shoe, which would generally make the pain worse. You could also consider splints and braces. There are many different kinds. You could opt for a flexible one that can be worn with your shoe or a more rigid one that is designed to be worn while you sleep. They are designed to keep the toes in proper position in order to relieve tension on the muscles and tendons to temporarily alleviate your pain.

4. Stretch Your Toes.

To help reduce sore joints and improve the strength of your toe and foot muscles, you should try some toe and foot exercises for a few minutes each day. Believe it or not, this actually does more than you think at relieving some of the discomfort and pain that you are feeling and fending off unwanted stiffness, particularly if arthritis begins to creep in. One easy exercise that you can try is to use your toes to pick up marbles, though simply stretching them straight ahead and curling them under can help.
