How It Works
The Mohs method was named after the surgeon who developed the technique in the 1930s. The skin cancer surgery involves removing the affected tissue and then examining it under a microscope while the procedure is ongoing. If the microscopic analysis shows that there are cancerous cells at the edge of the tissue, the surgeon removes another layer of tissue from the patient. If the edges show only normal tissue, the operation is stopped at that point. This technique allows the surgeon to remove all of the cancerous tissue, while leaving as much normal tissue as possible.
When It's Indicated
Mohs surgery is often indicated for two most prevalent types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It might or might not be the best treatment for melanoma, the most dangerous skin cancer. There is disagreement among physicians about whether Mohs surgery is a good option for melanoma, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Day of the Procedure
Mohs surgery typically takes about four hours from start to finish. Because some operations may take longer than expected, however, the Mayo Clinic advises patients to reserve an entire day for the surgery. The procedure is done at a doctor's office or outpatient clinic and a local anesthetic is used. After the doctor has removed a layer of affected tissue, you will need to wait while he examines it under a microscope. After the operation is completed, the surgeon may stitch up the area to close the wound. In some instances, a skin graft might be needed.
The Recovery Period
The immediate recovery period is generally about two weeks. You will need to wear a bandage over your wound during this time and also refrain from any rigorous activities. The scar over the wound will take a considerable amount of time to heal in many cases, perhaps as long as 12 months.

As a child, I used to spend my days roaming through the woods. I climbed trees, smelled the flowers, and laid in the grass looking at the clouds.
